Avalon Mini 3 Review: Noise, Heat, Power & Setup

Updated September 23, 2026

Avalon Mini 3 review: the practical answer

The Canaan Avalon Mini 3 is a 37.5 TH/s home Bitcoin miner built around using up to 800W of heat indoors. Its real selling point is not a magic profitability claim. It is the middle ground between a small desktop miner and a much higher-power home ASIC.

Best fit: someone who wants meaningful home hashrate, can use roughly 500–800W of room heat, and has checked the circuit, airflow, noise, and placement first.

Skip it: if you cannot use the heat, need a nearly silent bedroom, cannot keep children or pets away from the appliance, or have not confirmed a safe continuous electrical load.

Manufacturer facts, not reseller shorthand

Question Canaan-published answer What it means before buying
Hashrate 37.5 TH/s Substantially above a small desktop miner, but mining revenue and block timing still vary.
Maximum power 800W About 576 kWh over 30 days if it actually averages 800W around the clock.
Efficiency 21.3 J/TH A manufacturer rating, not a profit guarantee.
Noise 35–55 dB The 35 dB figure is tied to Canaan’s 500W Heater-mode test at 25°C, not every room or mode.
Networking Supplied USB Wi-Fi module; LAN supported Claims that it is Ethernet-only are incomplete. Unsupported third-party adapters are not guaranteed.
Size and weight 760 × 104 × 214.5 mm; 8.35 kg Long baseboard-style appliance, not a tiny shelf miner.
Safety features Tip-over power cut; IP22 Not child-safe, pet-safe, or waterproof. Placement still matters.

Heater, Mining, and Night modes

Heater mode

Heater mode lets the Mini 3 prioritize room temperature. Canaan documents Eco at 500W and Super at up to 800W, with a target ambient temperature in the Avalon Family App. When the target is reached, the device can idle and resume after the room cools.

Mining mode

Mining mode prioritizes maximum hashrate and efficiency. It does not provide the same room-temperature control, and fan noise can rise as the unit manages chip temperature.

Night mode

Night mode prioritizes lower fan noise and heating comfort. That does not make it silent or automatically appropriate beside every sleeper.

Avalon Mini 3 electricity cost

Power Approx. heat 30-day energy at 24/7 $0.08/kWh $0.12/kWh $0.16/kWh $0.20/kWh
500W 1,706 BTU/h 360 kWh $28.80 $43.20 $57.60 $72.00
800W 2,730 BTU/h 576 kWh $46.08 $69.12 $92.16 $115.20

These are electricity-only examples. They do not subtract pool revenue, solo-mining value, fees, hardware cost, or avoided heating cost. Heat reuse can change the household decision, but it does not make the power free.

Is the Avalon Mini 3 bedroom-friendly?

Do not answer that from one decibel number. Canaan’s low published figure is a specific 500W test. Full-power operation, warmer air, a reflective floor, vibration, or a restricted intake can sound different. Noise-sensitive sleepers should treat this as a test-first decision, not a promise.

Wi-Fi and LAN setup

  1. Give the intake and exhaust open space on a stable surface.
  2. Install the supplied USB Wi-Fi module, or use a supported LAN connection.
  3. Confirm your circuit and receptacle before connecting the 800W appliance.
  4. Use the Avalon Family App to onboard the miner, choose a mode, and set temperature controls.
  5. Add your selected SHA-256 pool credentials and verify accepted shares.

Canaan does not guarantee arbitrary USB Wi-Fi adapters, USB-to-LAN adapters, or hubs. Use the supplied or supported hardware before blaming the network.

Placement and safety

  • Do not block the intake or exhaust.
  • Keep it away from curtains, bedding, paper, and other materials that can obstruct airflow or contact hot air.
  • Keep children and pets away from the unit and cord. Tip-over protection does not make it child-safe or pet-safe.
  • IP22 provides limited protection from vertically falling water drops when the unit is tilted up to 15 degrees. It is not waterproof and is not suitable for wet locations.
  • Confirm the branch circuit’s continuous-load capacity and its other loads. Consult a licensed electrician when unsure.

Mini 3 accessory compatibility

The Canaan Cooler Box shroud sold by CryptoCloaks is for the Nano 3 and Nano 3S Cooler Box. It is not a Mini 3 shroud. Do not assume an Avalon Q shroud, Nano shroud, or generic duct part fits the Mini 3 without a physical fit and airflow test.

Bottom line

The Mini 3 makes the most sense when you want more home hashrate than a desktop miner and can actually use 500–800W of heat. Buy it for that combination, not because anyone promised fixed profit, a silent bedroom, or free heat.

Avalon Mini 3 FAQ

What is the Avalon Mini 3 hashrate?

Canaan rates it at 37.5 TH/s for SHA-256 mining.

How much power does it use?

Canaan lists 800W maximum power and documents a 500W Heater Eco setting. Actual average wall power depends on mode and operating conditions.

Does the Mini 3 have Wi-Fi?

Yes. Canaan documents a supplied USB Wi-Fi module and LAN support.

How loud is it?

Canaan publishes 35–55 dB. The low number comes with a specific 500W Heater-mode test condition and should not be treated as a universal bedroom promise.

Can I use it as a space heater?

It is designed as a household baseboard-style Bitcoin mining heater. Whether 500W or 800W is enough for your room depends on climate, insulation, airflow, and room size.

Is the Mini 3 profitable?

No fixed answer stays accurate. Compare measured wall power and your electricity rate against current mining revenue, pool terms, fees, uptime, and whether the heat is useful.
